Minister announces review of NI's private rented sector RSS feed

Speaking at the Housing Rights Service Bigger & Better Conference, Mervyn Storey MLA, Minister for Social Development, said that "now is the right time to look again at the regulation of the private rented sector."

The Minister stated that his departmental officials have begun a series of meetings with interested bodies and have already developed a list of issues. We were also delighted to be present at the conference, with Managing Director Ben Beadle speaking to give an update on deposit protection so far.

He announced that TDS NI has protected over 22,000 tenancy deposits since April 2013, but called for more action to increase uptake by landlords. He said;

"the response to deposit protection has been overwhelmingly positive, but the number of deposits protected is much lower than the number of tenancies out there."
