TDS NI were back at the NUS-USI Conference this year to give student representatives an update on tenancy deposit protection.

As you can see on Twitter the conference was as always a lively event with lots of hot debate!

Ben represented TDS NI last year to introduce the Scheme and the new legislation, and I was delighted to be invited back to give an update on how things are going, how deposit protection works, and what advice student representatives should be giving.

As of April 2013 all new deposits are required to be protected in a scheme such as TDS NI within 14 days. Landlords who fail to do so face strict penalties of up to £20,000. If tenants believe that money is being withheld unfairly at the end of the tenancy, they have access to free, impartial dispute resolution by the scheme, who will decide how the money is divided.
Tenancy deposit protection is just over a year old and a new experience for most renters.

It is fantastic to be working with NUS-USI to ensure student tenants, most of whom are renting for the first time, are knowing what should be happening to their deposit money.

Thank you to NUS-USI for inviting us back to the conference, and congratulations to Rebecca Hall who was re-elected as President of NUS-USI at the event.
