| 12 May 2022

The Private Tenancies Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 received Royal Assent on 27th April 2022 and makes changes to the Private Tenancies Order (Northern Ireland) 2006.

The Private Tenancies Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 received Royal Assent on 27th April 2022 and makes changes to the Private Tenancies Order (Northern Ireland) 2006.

One of the significant changes which will impact tenants and landlords is the Notice to Quit that each must provide to end a tenancy. These notice periods apply from the 5th May 2022 and replace the previous Covid 19 emergency legislation that was in place.

TDS Northern Ireland (TDSNI) advises our landlords, agents and tenants to review any existing tenancy agreements to make sure that the correct periods of notice to quit are applied or make any necessary changes for the future. This can help prevent any confusion during a tenancy and help for a smooth transition to ending the tenancy.

Depending on the length of the tenancy, the landlord must give their tenant a minimum notice to quit period.
